Long Island Today
Ranked by the review record · Nassau + Suffolk

The best lunch on Long Island.

The midday spots worth the detour — ranked the same way we rank the Best of LI, by the actual public review record, not by who bought an ad. A grandma slice in New Hyde Park, whole-belly fried clams at a 1939 counter, a drive-in burger off the hood of your car, and the roadside lobster roll that's been doing lunch since 1965.

How this list works: same method as Best of LI 2026 — spots are scored on the public Google review record (rating weighted by review count) and then the editors sanity-check the top of the board for the ones that are genuinely lunch destinations, not just dinner rooms open at noon. No votes, no sponsorships, no pay-to-play. Most of these have a full write-up in our handpicked restaurant directory.

The shortlist · explained

Where to actually go.

The quick, cheap lunch

If lunch is a fifteen-minute affair, this is the tier. A square grandma slice at Umberto's of New Hyde Park is the one Nassau slice worth crossing town for. A bialy or a bagel-with-whitefish at Strathmore Bagels in Ronkonkoma is the Suffolk counter-move. Both are cash-friendly and fast.

The counter classics

Bigelow's in Rockville Centre has fried whole-belly clams in a light ale batter at the same U-shaped counter since 1939 — order the clams and a cup of chowder, watch them cook it. Thomas's Ham & Eggery in Carle Place turns tables faster than anywhere in Nassau. Both are lunch counters in the truest sense.

The roadside lunch

The All American drive-in in Massapequa has griddled the same thin, crispy-edged burger since 1963: order at the window, eat it on the hood of your car. Out east, The Lobster Roll in Amagansett — the roadside spot with the big LUNCH sign — has done the same butter-toasted split-top since 1965.

The sit-down lunch

Modern Snack Bar in Aquebogue does old-school North Fork comfort food — roast turkey, mashed turnip, warm rolls — since 1950. Maureen's Kitchen in Smithtown is the weekend-line institution, breakfast-and-lunch until mid-afternoon. Both reward showing up hungry.
