Sag Harbor is the East End town that never fully turned into a resort. A former whaling port on the bay side of the South Fork, it kept its Main Street — the 1846 whaling-era storefronts, the Sag Harbor Cinema marquee, the tall-masted boats in the marina — and that lived-in quality is exactly why people who could summer anywhere choose here.
Come for a slow day: coffee and a pastry on Main Street, a wander through the John Steinbeck-haunted bookshop and the Whaling Museum, then lunch on the water at the American Hotel or a cone from the wharf.
