The Mineola Board of Education launched a search for a new superintendent following the resignation of Michael Nagler earlier this year after an investigation found that he had violated the district’s code of ethics and breached his employment contract.

The district has hired District Leadership Search Consultants LLC to lead the search and is seeking community input as it develops a profile for candidates.

A community forum is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mineola High School cafeteria. Residents also will be able to participate virtually through Google Meet. Feedback from the forum will be collected anonymously and compiled into a report that will help shape the criteria used to evaluate superintendent candidates.

Nagler resigned in February after being suspended in January amid an investigation into his involvement with Quave LLC, a private company he formed with his son, James Nagler, and a learning management system used by Mineola eighth-graders.

The controversy began after parents raised concerns about the district’s “Build Your Own Grade” program, which was introduced for eighth-grade students at the start of the 2025-26 school year. The program was terminated in October 2025.

Under the program, students started with grades of zero and increased their grades by completing digital learning tasks, including watching videos and responding to them. Parents said the program caused anxiety among students, many of whom had failing averages because they had not completed enough assignments to raise their grades.
