While most 17-year-olds spent their fall semester focused on college applications and social activities, Emily Navarro of Holbrook had a different mission: making sure local seniors would stay warm this winter.

Over three months, Emily assembled 200 winter care packages containing blankets, hand warmers, socks, tea, and handwritten notes. She distributed them to seniors at community centers, nursing homes, and through Meals on Wheels programs across Suffolk County.

"My grandmother passed away last year, and I kept thinking about all the seniors who don't have family nearby. Everyone deserves to feel cared for." — Emily Navarro

Emily funded the project through a combination of personal savings, a GoFundMe campaign that raised $3,500, and donations from local businesses. She spent weekends at her kitchen table assembling packages with help from friends and family.

Each package included a personal note written by Emily or one of her volunteers. "We wanted them to know that someone was thinking about them," she explained. "The notes were just as important as the blankets."

Recipients have sent letters of gratitude, with many expressing surprise that a teenager would think of them. Sachem School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Graham praised Emily at a recent board meeting, calling her "an example of the kind of citizens our schools aspire to develop."

Emily plans to make the project annual and hopes to expand to Nassau County next year. She's already recruiting volunteers for next fall's assembly days.
