What started as a few study sessions in Jake Morrison's basement has grown into Study Buddies LI, a free tutoring network with 50 volunteer tutors helping over 200 students across Nassau County.

The Massapequa High School senior launched the program in 2024 after noticing that many of his classmates struggled with subjects he found easier. "Private tutoring is expensive," Jake explained. "I thought, why not connect students who need help with students who can help?"

"Every kid deserves a chance to succeed, regardless of what their family can afford. We're just leveling the playing field." — Jake Morrison, Founder

The program matches high school and college volunteers with middle and high school students needing help in math, science, English, and test prep. Sessions are held at public libraries, community centers, and online via video chat.

Volunteers undergo a brief training program and are monitored by parent coordinators. Teachers at participating schools help identify students who might benefit from the free support.

Parent Jennifer Chen credits Study Buddies with turning around her daughter's math grades. "She went from failing to getting a B+. Jake and his tutors actually made learning fun for her."

Jake plans to continue running Study Buddies remotely while attending Cornell University next fall. He's already training a sophomore to take over local operations and hopes to eventually expand the model to Suffolk County.
