Stony Brook University Hospital has once again been named among America's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, marking the fourth consecutive year the Long Island institution has earned this prestigious distinction. This places Stony Brook in the top 1% of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide.
The recognition is based on clinical outcomes across multiple specialties, including cardiac care, orthopedics, critical care, and stroke treatment. Patients treated at hospitals receiving this award have, on average, a 27% lower risk of dying than if they were treated at hospitals that did not receive the award.
"This reflects the daily commitment of our entire team to provide exceptional, patient-centered care. Every nurse, doctor, and staff member contributes to this achievement." — William Wertheim, Executive VP, Stony Brook Medicine
The hospital's cancer program, trauma center, and pediatric services have all received national recognition in recent years. Their emergency department, one of the busiest on Long Island, has pioneered several innovations in patient flow and treatment protocols.
Stony Brook Medicine serves as the region's only academic medical center and Level I trauma center, treating over 35,000 patients annually in its emergency department alone. The hospital has also been at the forefront of medical research, with several groundbreaking studies in cancer treatment and infectious disease originating from its facilities.
"We're proud to serve Long Island," added Dr. Carol Gomes, CEO of Stony Brook University Hospital. "This award belongs to our community as much as to our staff — your trust in us drives everything we do."
