In an remarkable show of community support, Nassau County businesses and residents have donated over $1 million to veteran support programs in the past year — exceeding the annual fundraising goal by nearly 40%.

The United Veterans Beacon House, which provides housing and services to homeless veterans, was the largest beneficiary, receiving $425,000 to expand its transitional housing program. The funding will add 20 beds to their facilities in Hempstead and Freeport.

Major donors included local businesses large and small: car dealerships held fundraising drives, restaurants donated portions of sales, and several law firms pledged pro bono legal services for veterans navigating benefits claims.

One of the most touching contributions came from the students of Herricks High School, who raised $15,000 through bake sales, car washes, and a charity concert. "These kids organized everything themselves," said Principal Patricia Green. "They wanted to give back to those who served."

The funds support housing assistance, job training, mental health services, and family support programs for veterans across Nassau County. Executive Director Tom McCaffrey of the Veterans Service Agency called the outpouring "a reminder that our community never forgets those who served."

The annual Veterans Stand Down event, scheduled for March, will connect hundreds of veterans with services and resources funded by these donations.
