The Town of Islip Animal Shelter is celebrating its best month ever: 127 pets found forever homes in January, the highest adoption rate in the facility's 40-year history.
The surge in adoptions can be traced in part to an unlikely internet celebrity: a three-legged tabby cat named Tripod whose adoption video went viral on TikTok, garnering over 2 million views. The video, showing Tripod's joyful reaction to meeting his new family, inspired thousands of comments asking about other available pets.
"Tripod showed people that shelter animals — even those with special needs — have so much love to give. His story opened hearts." — Shelter Director Maria Gonzalez
The shelter responded to the viral moment by posting daily "meet the residents" videos, showcasing dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals awaiting adoption. Within two weeks, the shelter saw a 300% increase in adoption inquiries.
Families came from across Long Island and beyond. One couple drove from Connecticut after seeing a senior beagle's video. "We couldn't stop watching his videos. We knew he was meant to be ours," said new pet parent Jennifer Walsh.
The shelter is now working with other Town of Islip facilities to create similar social media content, hoping to replicate the success. They're also planning a "Tripod Day" celebration in March, inviting previous adopters to bring their pets for a reunion.
